Tao Of Love And Sex: Classic Taoist Formulas For Strengthening Male Sexuality

CLASSIC TAOIST FORMULAS FOR STRENGTHENING MALE SEXUALITY
Sexual problems are generally treated with classical formulas, some of which are found in the earliest traditional medical treatises, such as the Shang Han Lun (The treatise on febrile diseases). These formulas use plants from the following categories:
  • Energy tonics and blood tonics, used in combination to strengthen both energy and blood.
  • Yin tonics and yang tonics, used in combination to strengthen yin-yang balance.
  • Yin tonics, for toning the kidneys in cases of kidney yin deficiency.
  • Yang tonics, for treating deficiencies of kidney yang.
  • Energy tonics, to treat deficiencies of spleen and digestive weaknesses.
  • Blood tonics, for treating mental and psychological disorders.

Listed below are the traditional medicinal formulas that are most appropriate for treating male sexual problems. Their composition is precise, and they are usually prepared by specialized herbalists as either decoctions or soluble powders. Follow the herbalist's instructions as to the proper dose.

Kidney-toning pill for men
Nan Xing Bu Shen Wan
Composition: Rehmannia glutinosa, Aconite carmichaeli, Cornus officinalis (Shan Zhu Yu), Alisma orientale (Xe Xie), Plantago asiatica (Che Qian Zi), Cinnamomum cassia (Rou Gui). Actions: Tones and warms kidney yang, Tones kidney qi and kidney jing, diuretic.
General indications: Depletion of kidney yang, qi, and jing; lower-back pain; urinary incontinence; frequent, scanty urination, dribbling; cold extremities. Sexual indications: Sexual asthenia.
Format and dosage: Gel capsules, twenty per box (Lanzhou Fo Ci Pharmaceutical Factory; Lanzhou Gansu). One capsule twice daily, morning and evening.

Pill for the right kidney
You Gui Wan
Composition: Colla colmu cervi cortex, Cinnamomum cassia (Rou Gui), Cornus officinalis (Shan Zhu Yu), Lycium sinensis (Gou Qi Zi), Eucommia ulminoides (Du Zhong), Aconite car-michaeli, Rehmannia praeparata (Shou Di Huang), semen Cuscuta sinensis, Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui). Actions: Nourishes and mobilizes blood by toning the blood of the liver, tones and warms kidney yang, nourishes blood, tones jing.
General indications: Depletion of kidney yang with weakness of yuanqi, chronic nephritis, edema in the lower extremities, diabetes, exhaustion following protracted illness, intolerance of cold, aching and weakness in the lumbar region and knee joints, loose stools, occasionally lienteric (containing undigested food), urinary incontinence. Sexual indications: Impotence, spermatorrhea, sterility. Format and administration: This medicine is taken in the form of boluses, that is, traditional Chinese pills containing pulverized herbs bound together with honey. To make the boluses, reduce the ingredients to a powder, add a little honey, and roll into balls the size of green peas. Take six to twelve grams, two or three times a day, with a little warm water.
Decoction: Fifty to eighty grams per liter. Reduce to forty centiliters to be taken over the course of a day in three or four doses.

Drink for the right kidney
You Gui Yin
Composition: Rehmannia praeparata (Shou Di Huang), Cin-namomum cassia (Rou Gui), Lycium sinensis (Gou Qi Zi), Eucommia ulminoides (Du Zhong), Aconite carmichaeli, Cor-nus officinalis (Shan Zhu Yu), Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gan Cao).
Actions: Tones and warms kidney yang, tones jing. General indications: Depletion of kidney yang; true cold with pseudo-heat symptoms caused by a preponderance of yin with upward floating of deficient yang; diabetes insipidus; chronic nephritis; chronic bronchitis; cold extremities; aversion to cold; aching and weakness in the lumbar region and knee joints; abdominal pain; loose stools; frequent urination, with profuse and dilute urine; urinary incontinence.
Sexual indications: Impotence, spermatorrhea, premature ejaculation.
Format and administration: As a decoction, fifty to sixty grams per liter. Reduce to forty centiliters to be taken over the course of a day in three or four doses.

Kidney-toning pill for men

Composition: Rehmannia praeparata (Shou Di Huang), Poria cocos (Fu Ling), Paeonia alba (Bai Shao Yao), Schisandra sinensis (Wu Wei Zi), Aconite carmichaeli, Cornus officinalis (Shan Zhu Yu), Alisma orientale (Xe Xie), Plantago asiatica (Che Qian Zi), Cinnamomum cassia (Rou Gui). Actions: Tones and warms kidney yang, tones kidney qi and kidney jing, acts as a diuretic.
General indications: Depletion of kidney yang, qi, and jing; lower-back pain; urinary incontinence; frequent, scanty urination and dribbling; cold extremities. Sexual indications: Sexual asthenia.

Fertility-promoting pill
Zan Yu Dan
Composition: Aconite carmichaeli, Herba Cistanchis desedicolae, Epimedium grandiflora (Yin Yang Huo), Allium sativum (Da Suan), Cornus officinalis (Shan Zhu Yu), Rehmannia praepar-ata (Shou Di Huang), Lycium sinensis (Gou Qi Zi), Cinna-momum cassia (Rou Gui), Morinda officinalis (Ba Ji Tian), fructus Cnidii Monnieri, Rh Curculiginis orchioidis, Eucommia ulminoides (Du Zhong), Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), Atrac-tylodes macrocephala (Bai Zhu). Actions: Tones and warms the kidneys. General indications: Depletion of kidney yang (insufficiency of mingmen fire) and of yuancji, apathy, lack of determination, lumbago, weakness in the lumbar area, pallor. Sexual indications: Infertility, impotence. Format and administration: For boluses, reduce the ingredients to a powder, then add a little honey and form pills the size of green peas. Take three to six grams a day in two to three doses with a little hot water. In decoction, sixty to one hundred grams per liter. Reduce to forty centiliters to be taken over the course of a day in three to four doses.

Lower-back-fortifying and kidney-strengthening tablet
Yao Jian Shen Pian
Composition: Rhizoma Cibotii barometz, Eucommia ulminoides (Du Zhong), Loranthus parasiticus (Sang Ji Sheng), Poria co-cos (Fu Ling), caulis Millettiae reticulatae, fructus Rosae, Lae-vigatate sclerotium, Cordyceps sinensis, fructus Rubi chingii. Actions: Tones kidney qi and yang, strengthens the sinews and bones.
General indications: Depletion of kidney yang (often the resuit of sexual intemperance in men); chronic nephritis; lumbago; weakness in the lumbar region, waist, and knee joints; lower-back pain; vertigo; tinnitus; frequent, scanty urination, with dribbling; dyspnea; poor memory; fatigue. Sexual indications: Fatigue following sexual excesses. Format and administration: Pills, in bottles of one hundred (United Pharmaceutical Manufactory, Guangzhou, Guangdong). Four pills, once or twice a day, with a little warm water.

Kidney-toning cistanehe pill
Cong Rong Bu Shen Wan
Composition: Cistanchis desenicolae, semen Cuscuta sinensis, Rehmannia praeparata (Shou Di Huang), Schisandra sinensis (Wu WeiZi).
Actions: Nourishes yin and tones kidney jing and yang, strengthens sinews and bones.
General indications: Depletion of kidney yin, yang, and jing; lumbago; weakness in the lumbar area and knees; constipation in elderly patients; diminished vision; frequent urination; profuse perspiration.
Sexual indications: Impotence, premature ejaculation, spermatorrhea.
Format and administration: Pills, in bottles of two hundred (Lanzhou Fo Ci Pharmaceutical Factory; Lanzhou). Eight pills, three times a day, with a little warm water.

The next four formulas are traditional Taoist liquors that are used to strengthen sexual energies; they are prepared by decocting the ingredients in rice wine or other strong alcohol. The resulting liquor is then stored in a dark place for two to three months.

Golden phoenix liquor
Ingredients: Rehmannia praeparata (Shou Di Huang), Reh-mannia glutinosa (Sheng Di Huang), Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), Ophiopogon japonicus (Mai Men Dong), Lycium sinensis (Gou Qi Zi), Epimedium grandiflora (Yin Yang Huo), Amo-mum villosum.
Steep all the ingredients together in rice wine for at least a month.
Actions: Tones kidney yin and yang, supplements jing and
the energy of the dantian.
General indications: Chronic fatigue.
Sexual indications: Sexual asthenia.

Wine of the two immortals
Ingredients: Cornu cervi (Lu Rong), Cervus Nippon jelly, Chi-nemys reevesii, Chinemys reevesii jelly, Lycium sinensis (Gou Qi Zi), Panax schinseng (Ren Shen), Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), Astragalus membraneceus.
Steep all ingredients together in rice wine for at least three months.
Actions: Nourishes yin and marrow, tones and supplements qi of the dantian, tones the kidneys, enhances the three treasures.
General indications: Lower-back pain. Sexual indications: Seminal emissions.

Li Shih-chen's aphrodisiac formula
Li Shih-chen is China's most renowned herbalist; his magisterial work, Pen-ts'ao Kang-mu (Compendium of materia medica), contains thousands of medicinal formulas, including this ancient Taoist "aphrodisiac pill." Ingredients: Cyperus rotundus (Xiang Fu), Poria cocos (Fu Ling mushroom), and honey, as a binder for the other two ingredients.
Actions: Tones jing and yang qi.
Sexual indications: Sexual fatigue, impotence, lack of sexual -desire.
Dosage: One to three boluses for fifteen days. Virile wine
Ingredients: Dioscorea opposita (10 grams), Cornus officinalis (10 grams), Schisandra sinensis (10 grams), Panax schinseng (10 grams).
Actions: Tones jing, yang qi, the spleen, the stomach, muscles, and tendons.
Sexual indications: Sexual fatigue, impotence. This Taoist wine, a major tonic with both sexual and digestive properties, is prepared by placing the ingredients in a liter of strong alcohol and letting them steep for at least two months.
Administration: One to two glasses a day. (Do not begin this treatment in midsummer.)
