SIGNS OF SEXUAL STRENGTH OR WEAKNESS
The Taoist sexual method offers various ways of gauging a man's or a woman's sexual capacities. Some of these ways are quite useful, others are of purely anecdotal interest. For example, the amount of sperm a young man produces at ejaculation reliably indicates the degree of his sexual vigor: the more sperm, the more jing, the proverb says. This statement has led some to think that jing and sperm are one and the same thing. According to Taoists, this perspective is too limited.
As we have said, the Chinese Taoists believe that when a man grows old and has sexual relations too often, three symptoms will be observed: lower-back pains, blurry vision, and hearing problems. The ears are thus a good way of checking sexual strength. The Western adage that masturbation causes deafness represents an intuition entirely in line with Taoist teachings. In the Neijing, it is also noted that the ears are an emanation of the kidneys; the Taoists have pointed out that most people who enjoy a long life have big ears, and one of the criteria by which they judge the health of the kidneys consists of looking at the shape of the ears. A person with large, fleshy ears, it is said, has plenty of energy and drive, and his sexual energy is strong. On the other hand, people who have small, thin ears rarely enjoy great longevity. Most of these people have weaker, relatively deficient kidneys and thus tend to be passive. One ought not to overgeneralize, however; pulse taking is a better, more serious way of assessing the state of the kidneys than physiognomy.

Other signs that are part of the ancient Taoist science of physiognomy are more anecdotal. Here are a few examples:
